In the sound processing market, you won't find a more fiercely competitive segment than foot-operated effects processor. But that is precisely the segment that ZOOM took on in 1994. It's initial product, the 2020, was to earn the distinction of being the very first model in the company's mainstay Zoom Player series, and would go on to win the hearts of guitarists everywhere. ZOOM then add variations with the 4040, 1010, 3030, 8080, 3000, and 2100.

Exciting developments took place in the company's rack category as well with the launch of a brand new Zoom Studio series, starting with the 1202, which contained 512 different effect programs. This was succeeded by the 1204 in 1996 and the 1201 in 1997. Again, all products remained below the common price mark, without compromising on performance and sound quality. These devices continue to be established fixtures in the racks of many musicians today.

In 1996, ZOOM inaugurated a brand new series in the field it had pioneered many years ago; that of compact multi-effects. The series featured the 505 for guitar and the 506 for bass, and represented the next evolutionary step for the 1010, which had been the most successful product from the foot pedal series. The aim was to take the 1010 and offer it at the lowest price possible, which is why the company gave it a model number exactly half that of the 1010. The 505 debuted at an amazingly low price. Needless to say, it quickly became ZOOM's all-time best-selling device and still far outsells its competing products.
